This access statement does not contain personal opinions as to our suitability for those with access needs, but aims to describe accurately the facilities and services that we offer all our guests.

Introduction

  • Situated in the heart of the South Hams, Kerswell Farm is an ideal place to stay for those seeking a quiet retreat or doing business in South Devon (Torquay 14ml/37min, Plymouth 28 ml/50min, Exeter 35ml/1hr). The ancient market town of Totnes and the beautiful port of Dartmouth are both 5.6ml/17min away.
  • Kerswell Farmhouse is located at 450ft above sea level and enjoys unparalleled views across open countryside to Dartmoor in the north-west. It is approached through a network of country lanes.
  • Kerswell Farm offers two Shepherd Huts. Both are accessed by two steps up to a deck and a short flight of four steps with handrail into the hut. Inside there is level access to the shower room.
  • There are large supermarkets and independent shops selling cheese, fruit and vegetables, fish and delicatessen products in Totnes and Dartmouth and village shops in Dittisham and Harbertonford.

  • The nearest railway station is Totnes, which is 5.6ml away. Direct trains to Totnes are available from London, Penzance, the Midlands and North and Scotland. Taxis are usually available at the station, but it is safer to book:

  • Cars may be hired from Simple Car Hire at Totnes Station (01803 431250). They will meet clients with the car outside the down platform building. Paperwork and payment are handled there.
  • The nearest airport is Exeter and others include Newquay and Bristol. Travellers should check services on the airport websites.

Arrival

  • Kerswell Farmhouse and the Shepherd Huts are accessed by gravel drives.
  • Car parking spaces are available next to each hut. The car park is well lit at night by motion sensing lights.
  • Guests are asked to call at Kerswell Farmhouse for their keys and are then escorted to their hut where all facilities are explained to them.

Hut interiors

  • Two shepherd huts are available, The Cress Well and The Three Hares. Both huts have double beds slightly raised above normal height to provide views across open countryside. A wooden step is provided to make accessing the bed easier for those who may require it.
  • Lighting is provided by a range of wall lamps and spotlights including reading lights over the beds
  • The huts have sheep’s’ wool duvets and pillows, cotton-mix sheets, towels by Beaumont and Brown and bathroom products by Cole and Lewis.
  • The huts have 24” flat-screen televisions with remote control devices.
  • Free WiFi with ultra-fast (Starlink) Internet access is available in both huts.
  • Windows are fitted with roller blinds.
  • Heaters are provided in the bathrooms and living areas.
  • Hut kitchen areas have large capacity refrigerators.
  • Hut kitchens are equipped with microwave ovens and double induction hobs.
  • If guests are bringing a dog they are requested to bring a suitable dog bed and biodegradable poo bags.

Shower Rooms

  • The huts have en-suite shower rooms with walk-in showers.
  • The lavatory pedestal height is 400mm.
  • The wash basin plinth height is 800mm.
  • The shower rooms are well lit.
  • The doors to the shower rooms are 750mm wide.
  • Washbasins have lever taps.

Additional Information

  • Each hut has a wooden deck approached by two steps. Decks are well-illuminated. A table and four outdoor chairs are provided as well as a parasol.
  • The Shepherd Hut meadow is of gentle gradient though the wider grounds and footpaths of Kerswell have steep gradients and many steps.
  • To one side of the meadow where the huts are situated is a pond graduated from .5m to 1.5m in depth. Although children under 12 are not accommodated at the shepherd huts, any temporarily visiting children should not be permitted to approach the pond unaccompanied by an adult.
  • A set of evacuation procedures is available in each guest bedroom.
  • If required please request on arrival that assistance be provided in the event of any evacuation.
  • The nearest General Hospital with an A&E unit is 14ml away in Torquay and the nearest Doctor’s surgery is 5.6ml away in Totnes. Please let us know if you require further information about these.
  • On the Kerswell Farmhouse website there is a list of nearby attractions and suggested inns and restaurant for dining.
  • The nearest post box is on the wall of The Old Smithy at Tideford on the road from Kerswell towards Dartmouth. The nearest post offices are at Harbertonford and Dittisham (in the Red Lion public house). The nearest cash machines are at Morrisons Supermarket in Totnes and Sainsburys in Dartmouth.
